Quoting Kyle Kingsbury

More broadly, the use of LLMs erodes trust in documentation, in software, and in the organizations which produce them. Perhaps engineers will begin to treat any new software project with suspicion—the signals we used to rely on as markers of a mature system are now easier to counterfeit. [...] In the age of LLMs, what can maintainers do to ensure correct software and accurate documentation? Having done that work, how can they demonstrate its quality to users? — Kyle Kingsbury , Jepsen results for ParticleDB 1.1.4 Tags: kyle-kingsbury , llms , ai , generative-ai , ai-misuse

If in doubt, delete the uv.lock file

I've been getting the occasional confusing Python dependency error since switching over to Python 3.15 and the rule I'm having to remember is: If in doubt, delete the uv.lock file Most of my projects are libraries which don't include a uv.lock file, since it's rude for a library dependency to lock versions for anything else that uses it. Running uv run pytest etc tends to leave uv.lock files lying around, which are listed in .gitignore and so do not get committed to my repositories. But... sometimes that uv.lock pins a version of a dependency that doesn't yet have a Python 3.15 wheel. An example from earlier today: error: Failed to build `watchfiles==1.1.1` cause: Call to `maturin.build_wheel` failed error: the configured Python interpreter version (3.15) is newer than PyO3's maximum suppo

When Electric Cars Were for Women

At the turn of the last century, the automobile industry was still new and evolving rapidly. In 1898, there were about 50 carmakers in the United States. A decade later, that number had increased fivefold. In 1901, the companies produced 7,000 vehicles. By 1910, production had reached 181,000. For several decades, electric cars vied with those powered by steam and internal combustion, and nobody was sure which technology would come out on top. Steam had the legacy of locomotive technology behind it but came with a risk of fire. Steam-powered vehicles could also become exceedingly hot, depending on the placement of the boiler and the steam piping. Both gasoline and electric cars faced logistical challenges: How far could you travel without refueling or charging? You could always throw an ex

NASA hopes the commercial space industry can help save Hubble

Gravity is a cruel mistress, slowly dragging the famed telescope ever closer to its ultimate demise with every day. Hubble is in no immediate danger of burning up in the Earth's atmosphere, but its time will run out in the early to mid 2030s unless its orbit is boosted. So NASA is taking proposals from […]

A fully playable version of Portal prequel F-Stop leaked

Leakers have pieced together a playable version of the canceled Portal prequel F-Stop. Most of the assets came from the massive 12-terabyte leak that dropped this August. That didn't include the game's source code or map data, but those final pieces apparently hit the Valve Cut Content Discord this week, allowing a nearly complete version […]

btw @karpathy uses medium on opus 5.5 on his latest project (Hackertube launched today). overall i think having strong opinions on effort levels is like the tabs vs spaces of our time. just tweak to taste. altho mine is definitely superior to yours. https://t.co/oSCPvlogKc https://t.co/3OIWb03BtY
