Deno is joining Cloudflare

Deno is joining Cloudflare The Deno team released the first version of celld back in August - their open source implementation of the Durable Objects pattern from Cloudflare Workers. Today, Cloudflare are acquiring Deno outright, with the goal of building on celld to "make workerd self-hosting a first-class supported way to build and run apps using the Workers programming model" (see the Cloudflare blog .) The bad news is that Deno itself will not be maintained by Cloudflare beyond the next year: We will support the Deno runtime for another year with monthly releases containing bug fixes and security updates. After that year we will end our development of the Deno runtime. Deno will remain open source, and we welcome others who want to continue its development. Deno (and Node.js) creator R

A new feature for my blog, built using my voice

I shipped a new feature for my blog today: the Newsletters page, which offers an index of all of the newsletters I've sent out, both my free weekly Substack and my monthly sponsors-only updates. I built the feature almost entirely using my voice, chatting away to my laptop while I cooked dinner. Codex voice mode I used the ChatGPT desktop app for this, in the Codex tab, using the voice conversation mode, running against a local development environment. Here's what that looks like: I started the session against my local simonwillisonblog checkout by typing: Start dev server and open in browser This gave me a preview of the site that it would be working on, and meant that I could later ask it to show me the new pages so I could visually track its progress. Then I clicked the "Start new voice

Quoting Matthew Green

Everyone is very concerned about being respectable, so I’m going to be the goofball who raises worst-case possibilities. I think there is a 1% chance we live in Minicrypt, and a 15% chance we functionally lose confidence in our existing public-key encryption algorithms. [...] The problem here is that the speed of AI producing surprises, and the speed of human beings replacing standards (even with the very best AI assistance) are just orders of magnitude different. You only recover from a surprise like this if you do the preparation in advance. — Matthew Green , on Twitter. I looked it up and Minicrypt is Russell Impagliazzo’s hypothetical world in which public-key encryption is impossible. Master AI Chip Principles With New IEEE Design Program

Today’s engineers face an unprecedented acceleration in AI hardware complexity, as explained in the recent research article “ Revisiting Edge AI: Opportunities and Challenges .” The article examines the rapid growth of edge AI and the challenges it creates, including resource constraints, model architecture limitations, and network demands across edge-AI deployments. The acceleration is driven by a fundamental shift in how modern AI models are built and scaled. As the models have become much larger and more complex, they are computationally more demanding because they contain more parameters and require more calculations. To meet the demands of scaling deep neural networks, the industry is increasingly developing AI chips that are designed for specific tasks. One major reason is that movin

Amazon and others are done keeping data center deals secret. Is it enough to build trust?

Amazon says it will stop using NDAs when negotiating data center deals with local governments, following a similar move from Microsoft earlier this year. Secrecy has fueled community backlash against AI infrastructure, with opposition leading to hundreds of proposed and enacted moratoriums from New York to San Francisco. Meanwhile, a wave of startups is betting that consumers will hand AI agents access […]

Decade-old RAM is making a comeback

CPU makers have noticed that the seemingly unending RAM price hikes are making it tough for a lot of us to upgrade our PCs. Their solution? A return to last-gen DDR4 RAM. Intel and AMD are making new CPUs that'll support the older, more affordable type of memory. On Friday, Gigabyte announced that two of […]

Amazon’s new Kindles appear to have a light leak problem

Some users are reporting that the new Kindles have a light leak issue that is especially apparent when using dark mode. The latest base-model Kindles have a flush bezel that gives them a sleek appearance and looks great… as long as you keep the lights on. But things can change once you turn down the […]

Google teases Fitbit Edge launch next week

It looks like Google is getting ready to take the wraps off its rumored Fitbit Edge next Monday. In a post on X, Google posted a picture of what appears to be the side of the fitness tracker, with the caption: "Get an Edge on your health. 10.12.26." A trove of Fitbit Edge leaks has […]

Microsoft tries to spark new life into Windows

When Microsoft released Windows 11 five years ago, it felt like an operating system that was still being renovated, a work in progress. You'd think by now that those renovations would be complete, with Microsoft turning its attention to Windows 12. Instead, Windows 11 feels like it's here to stay, forming the foundation for Microsoft's […]

We Need to Embed Ethics Into Our Engineering Courses

In mid-September, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei joined a growing group of researchers calling for the AI industry to slow down. While some have questioned these researchers’ motivation for voicing concerns about the rapid pace of development, the plea highlighted a key tension between safety and speed. The underlying problem is not simply a technical error, but a sociotechnical failure: Pressure to move quickly has made it hard for engineers to fully assess and manage new risks of increasingly powerful AI systems. It is a clear warning that responsible engineering requires more than technical expertise; engineers must also understand workplace pressures, moral and ethical rules, and the social consequences rooted in the systems they create. Cases like this, alongside invasive surveillance tec

This sounds weird, but it is actually probably a good policy. Even if you don’t believe AI is conscious (I don’t), it stands to reason that you don’t want future models trained on endless content of humans being rude to models. The models only understand the data they’ve been trained on, or what they run into in their interactions, so if you want safe and aligned models we probably want AI to have lots of good interactions in their training data. Anthropic may have more extreme beliefs than this (though even if they didn’t, you may want to word policies like this), but this is sort of an easy Pascal’s wager for AI. Just be nice to the AI.

Met a close friend who’s also a seed stage founder today.. They have been growing but runway is dwindling and he wanted advice on what he should do next. Stellar customers, getting close to a $1M in revenue. Not a rocket ship, but not bad at all. He thinks he’s a bit early since the models haven’t caught up to the capabilities he wants but he also really feels the opportunity cost. I have this same exact conversation at least 2x a week. In this moment, you only have essentially three options: 1) if you have intense belief in the company, be a cockroach and get to default profitable. once the capabilities get there, you feel the demand, then go raise a large round and go for the jugular. 2) find an orthogonal area that is much more relevant and growing like crazy. ride the coat tails of new existing capabilities and push hard to capture them quickly using unfair advantages. and if you don’t have that, then.. 3) sell / get acquihired and join a far more ambitious company that has figured out a lot of the things you haven’t. And then get back to starting a new company 1-2 years later when you find the next thing you want to build. It’s hard but honestly those are the three options you have. And it really depends what category you’re in. The bar continues to get harder every month on how to cross the chasm from seed -> series A. The old school metrics are just not relevant anymore and in this consensus market there’s only a few categories where there’s tremendous pull on the VC front. You could lament that this is the state of the market, but it’s better to know it’s happening than be oblivious on what is actually happening. I get to share this directly which makes me uncomfortable but at least someone has to say it out loud 🙈
